How Porcelain Tiles Are Made

A mixture is created using sand and a dense clay, which is combined with water and mixed again, starting the process of the porcelain tile.

The mixture is then dried, by evaporating water from the mix will help create a harder tile that will maintain its durability.

The tile is then formed, pressing the mix down in a template. The pressure of forming the tile gives it the strength that porcelain is known for.

Next, the tiles are dried again, removing as much water as possible to ensure that the tiles do not crack in freezing temperatures.

The tile is then decorated by printing a high-resolution image on to the tile.

Finally, the tile is baked in a kiln, with temperatures reaching up to 1300c, this final process is to once again dried to remove as much water as possible.

Adhesives

Palace Flexi-Set Rapid

Ideal for fixing tiles to solid uneven floors, heated sub-floors and 15mm ply-wood overlay. Suitable for interior and exterior, it can be laid up to a 25mm thick bed to accommodate minor variations in the underlying level. Which is perfect for laying heavy large format tiles.

Palace Easi-Flex

A standard setting adhesive for fixing tiles to solid waterproof floors and 15mm ply-wood overlay. Available in white or grey, it creates a water-resistant bond in just 24 hours, making it suitable for interior and exterior use.

GftK VDW 815 Plus

A self-compacting paving joint mortar used for high performance areas, suitable for high performance areas, suitable for joints as small as 2mm. Abrasion and frost resistant, it is highly durable and can be applied in the rain or in low temperatures.

Laying Tips

The following laying tips are suggestions only. Please seek advice from professional before attempting these techniques. You must ensure that the appropriate safety measures are taken for the duration of the laying process.

Process One

Placing the tiles on to a levelled-out bed of wet sand / cement mortar.

The mortar bed needs to be 6:1 or a stronger mix of grit with ordinary Portland cement, a minimum of 20mm thick.

The mix should be placed over a prepared base / sub-base, making sure it has enough depth to create a rigid layer capable of supporting itself and the paving units. A sub-base is essential for this method.

A bond bridge primer should then be applied to the underside of the tile before placing. Use joint spacers for consistency.

Combine the tiles to the correct fall and level, this needs to be accurate as tapping down needs to be taken into account.

Tap down the tile to ensure that 70% of the tile base is in direct contact with the supporting bed, having too little can result in an unsupported tile.

Process Two – Fixing to a pre-installed base

The base is usually rigid, which can be placed in advance in preparation for laying the bed. The concrete base doesn’t need to be reinforced, a 75-100mm thick slab of mass concrete, (C7.5 or stronger), can be poured or retained by formwork to ensure the finished levels need to accommodate the bed and tiles.

The bed thickness is critical when establishing the finished level of the base onto which will be laid. To ensure a high standard of finish, the tiles need to be laid to the falls and levels over a bed of uniform depth.

An adhesive is spread over the rigid base

A bond bridge primer should then be applied to the underside of the tile before placing. Please note, this may not be necessary so please refer to the adhesive instructions.

Batches

Tiles may vary from batch to batch; therefore, we recommend that the customer buys all in one go. When calculating how much is needed, you will need to allow for cuts and wastage of up to 15%. Depending on the area and when using larger tiles, the wastage maybe lighter.

Rectified and non-rectified

Not all tiles are rectified as standard, please check before ordering if you want them rectified. For non-rectified tiles you need to install with at least a 5mm joint. Installation using pedestals always require a rectified tile.
